I got a dog on Tuesday and she is wonderful! I rescued a 2 year old lab mix from the humane society named Krista. She's been a joy.
Going to the humane society makes me sad. People are so uncaring and irresponsible. An animal is a responsibility and can be a great joy if you care enough to train it and love it. Like my dog. She is already trained and housebroken. She walks on a leash, loves people, and isnt afraid of the vacuum. I'm grateful for all of this, but it makes me wonder. Someone put time into training her, and working with her and then what? She ran away and no one cared? They let her go? She had been at the shelter for a month, its not like they didnt have time to find her.
Our humane society is overfilled. It isnt a no-kill shelter so if they dont have the space, they make it, which sounds cruel but I guess they dont really have a choice. But as I was walking through there, looking at all these dogs and cats, I felt sad, but also angry. Why are people so careless. Animals arent just there - they need to be taken care of. Animals are completely dependant on their owners for everything. Food, care, love. If you cant provide these things - DONT GET AN ANIMAL. Is it really that hard?
My dog has had puppies. I hope that the people who didnt care enough about her, care a little more about her puppies. Enough to find them good homes with people who actually want them.
I hope that any of you out there get your next pet from a shelter. Give a pet a second chance - It makes you feel like you made a difference.
